Specialist, External Communications

Summary and Qualifications:

The Specialist, External Communications will provide execution and support for public and media relations, corporate social responsibility and industry relations, as well as overall tactical execution across the External Communications team in its daily activities.


Essential Responsibilities and Tasks:



  • Live and exemplify the Five Principles of Mars, Inc. within self and team.

  • Serve as a member of the External Communications team and support strategic planning, project coordination and support.

  • Produce general communications including, but not limited to, press materials, articles/blogs, social media copy, and talking points for external audiences including media, academia, community partners and pet owners.

  • Create and maintain a schedule of external communication events and activities, and perform general administrative duties, such as tracking media coverage, developing project briefs, assisting with presentation materials and developing measurement reports after various initiatives are completed.

  • Liaise directly with subject matter experts, hospital associates, external partners, and senior leaders to provide, counsel, prep and support for external engagements, including but not limited to media interviews, speeches and events.

  • Support practice-wide issues and crisis management across a dispersed workforce, including but not limited to messaging development, media relations, and internal communications.

  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders and agency partners handle aspects of media relations and recap coordination specific to campaigns and community, media and industry events.

  • Support community outreach and events, as well as industry and profession events, in addition to meeting coordination.

  • Ability to work on various projects and with several teams and stakeholders simultaneously.

  • Other job duties as assigned.





Special Working Conditions:


  • Ability to work at a computer for long periods of time.

  • Project timelines and work volume / deadlines may often require more than 40 hours per week to complete essential duties of this job.

  • Must have mental processes for reasoning, remembering, mathematics and language ability (reading, writing, and speaking the English language) to perform the duties proficiently.

  • Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form and to solve problems involving several variables.

  • Ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and climb as well as manipulate (lift, carry, move) up to 50 pounds.

  • Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm-hand-finger dexterity with the ability to grasp, and visual acuity to use a keyboard and operate necessary equipment.

  • The noise level in the work environment is normally moderate.

  • Environment where pets are present.




Experience, Education and/or Training:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, English, Public Relations, Marketing or Business is required, or the equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Three to five years of relevant external communications experience, preferably including media relations and social media proficiency; agency experience required.
