Program overview
Who said you have to wait until your clinical year to see the inside of a clinic? The Student Job Program is a unique program designed for 1st – 3rd year veterinary students who want to experience real-world learning in a clinical setting. Under the supervision of your coach doctor and in accordance with the state's practice act, you will work as a veterinary assistant in a supportive team environment. You’ll learn how to perform a physical exam, provide proper veterinary care, use diagnostic tools and interpret diagnostic materials effectively, learn surgical preparation and monitoring, and grow your professional interpersonal skills through communication training.
The Experience
In accordance with your state guidelines:
- learn how to perform a physical exam provide proper veterinary care
- use diagnostic tools, learn surgical preparation and monitoring
- develop professional interpersonal skills
- have support from your coach doctor and team every step
Dates and deadlines
Start date: can be any time Between April 15th, 2024 and September 15th, 2024.
Duration: Duration is flexible! Spend as little as 1 week with us… or all summer (up to 14 weeks, it’s up to you!)

Student debt relief eligibility
We know how burdening student debt can be coming out of veterinary school, which is why Banfield offers a Student Debt Relief Program, to take some of the pressure of paying back loans, so you can focus on doing what you love. New Banfield DVMs are eligible to receive a one-time $2,500 payment for each qualifying Banfield student job program or externship they participate in before graduating, up to $10,000 (or four Externships, SJPs, or a combination). This amount will be paid directly towards the associate’s student loans on their one-year anniversary, not paid out as a bonus or otherwise reflected in a paycheck.Interested in one of our programs?
